SOME of the hardest working volunteers in Frankston had their efforts recognised last week. The annual Impact Volunteer Awards honour the Frankston residents who go above and beyond volunteering for good causes. The ceremony was held last week. Beverley Valentine from Meals on Wheels and Marcus Grinblat from Coast Guard Frankston won the service to the community award. Jack Wheeler from Peninsula Transport Assist won the initiative award, and the organisation itself won the outstanding volunteer organisation honour. Frankston police have charged a man after he allegedly made more than 200 calls to Triple Zero (000) over seven days in October. The 73-year-old man has been charged with multiple counts of using a telecommunications service to harass and improper use of an emergency service. The charges follow an investigation into 248 nuisance calls made to Triple Zero (000) between 12-19 October. The man was arrested on Wednesday 19 October after officers attended an address on Skye Road to investigate the circumstances surrounding the calls about 5.30pm. Detectives from the Cybercrime Squad are investigating over 150 reports of remote access scams, already costing victims in excess of $4m in under five months. Typically, a victim will receive an unexpected call from someone purporting to be an employee of a reputable company or organisation. The caller will claim that the victim has been charged for a purchase they didn’t make, that something is wrong with the victim’s computer or internet connection, or that malware has been installed on one of more of their devices, which the caller will suggest they can help remove. A CHELSEA Heights tennis player has been named a finalist for the Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards. Mischa Ginns is in the running for the sportsperson of the year award in the community category. Ginns plays blind tennis at a state level and has established a local program to get other people involved as well. The awards ceremony will take place on 8 November. KINGSTON Council says it is “encouraged” by plans to incorporate elements of the old Parkdale Station into the planned rebuild of the train station. Earlier this month the Level Crossing Removal Project unveiled new plans for the redeveloped Parkdale Station precinct. It is planning to use the old station building in the new design.
