A MORDIALLOC life saver was among the winners at the Victorian Sports Awards earlier this month. Mordialloc Life Saving Club member Samanatha Barrow won the coveted Involve Masters Athlete of the Year award. Barrow had a big year in 2021. At last year’s Victorian Masters Championships she finished first in the 45-49 years women’s two kilometre run, beach flags, and beach sprint events. She went on to win silver and bronze at the national championships. A panel of 30 Victorian sportspeople chose the winners of the awards. THE pedestrian bridge above the Frankston line in Chelsea has officially opened. The bridge was built as part of the level crossing removal at Chelsea. It is nearly seven metres wide and spans from Station Street to the Nepean Highway shopping strip. Another project which formed part of level crossing removal works, the 11 kilometre path between Edithvale and Frankston, was also officially opened last week. The event runs from 3pm to 6pm. AN acclaimed local artist has been commissioned to create a sculpture at Karingal Hub. The sculpture will be installed at the shopping centre’s new town square area. McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park alongside shopping centre owner ISPT have selected artist Christabel Wigley (pictured left) to create the piece. The artwork will be a 2.4 metre tall shell-inspired piece titled Sound Shell. THE Women’s Spirit Project group is celebrating the conclusion of one of its major programs. The group recently finished its 2022 spirit of transformation program. The free 12-week program is for women aged over 24 who have experienced hardships like family violence, mental health issues, poverty, and unemployment. The course is run alongside facilitators and mentors who help the participants gain confidence and develop strategies to achieve their goals.
