Police are investigating following the discovery of a body at Mordialloc overnight.

Police and emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a White Street residential complex about 12.50am.

Fire crews arrived to find a second storey unit fully engulfed and worked to extinguish the fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters located a body inside the unit and notified police.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and an arson chemist will attend in the morning.

The body is yet to be formally identified.

While police were at the scene it’s alleged a man was assaulted by another man.

Police arrested a 49-year-old Mordialloc man.

He was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be interviewed at a later date.

The alleged victim, a 35-year-old Mordialloc man, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The investigations into the cause of the fire and alleged assault are ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the fire is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
