Southern Metropolitan Region officers supported by specialist police coordinated the successful arrest of an alleged armed offender following a car-jacking in Frankston and subsequent pursuit overnight.

Police have been told the victim was threatened with a handgun, in the driveway of a business in Ashley Avenue, and his Hyundai ix35 stolen about 12.45am.

Somerville Highway Patrol members spotted the stolen car nearby and followed from a distance before officers, making a risk assessment, initiated a pursuit.

The pursuit went for just under 25 minutes through a number of streets in Carrum Downs and into Dandenong before the driver of the stolen car pulled into a driveway, tried to run away, and was arrested.

No one was injured.

The driver of the car, a 22-year-old man from Endeavour Hills, is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are investigating whether another man was also involved in the theft of the car and may have decamped from the initial scene in a black Holden Commodore just prior to the stolen car taking off.

The handgun is yet to be recovered.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report in www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
