Police are investigating the theft of a purse from a car in Mt Eliza in June.

Investigators have been told an offender gained entry into a vehicle between 22 and 23 June and stole a purse containing cash, a department store gift card and a credit card.

The offender attempted to use the credit card on 23 June at 7.33am at a convenience store in Black Rock.

It was subsequently used at 8.03am on the same day at a Black Rock supermarket where items totalling $173 were purchased through two transactions.

Police have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist them with their enquiries.

He was wearing a black T-shirt with three white stripes on the front, denim jeans and a black baseball cap.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 00 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
