Late last night the Principal of Toorak College, Mrs Kristy Kendall, sent an email out to parents informing them that a parent at the school had received a positive diagnosis for COVID-19.

The email, sent at 11.22pm, stated “Just over an hour ago, I received a phone call from a parent in our community who has received a positive test for COVID-19. She is currently self-isolating at home and doing well. Her child was absent from school this week, however, was in attendance last week. While our student is currently well, they are being monitored closely at home. I ask that out of respect for the family, you consider the privacy of this matter.”

The school contacted the Department of Health and Human Services last night and were informed that there is no need to adjust any practices at Toorak College, as the confirmed case of COVID-19 is not a student or staff member.

“However, I have previously promised you that we would take extra precautions where we deem necessary, and in particular in cases where the risk of transmission increases,” said Mr Kendall.

“Based on this, we have made the decision to take the extra precaution of ceasing our on-campus program at the end of day tomorrow, Wednesday 18th March. We expect that many families will make the decision to stay at home tomorrow.

“Our remote and online learning program due to commence Monday 23rd March will continue as planned with both our staff and students looking forward to this new educational landscape.

“I would like to reassure you that there is no additional cause for alarm, however, we ask that you remain vigilant in checking for symptoms and that you contact [me] if you, or a member of your family, have been required to self-isolate”.
