Future of weekly bin collections considered

A MOVE to fortnightly rubbish bin collections is being assessed by Frankston Council as it looks to reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill.

Frankston Council is currently investigating ways to divert more waste from landfill. A survey it is conducting asks residents their thoughts on a proposed change to fortnightly general rubbish bin collections.

A “waste circularity” plan is currently out for consultation. Frankston councillor Sue Baker said that waste circularity means “being smarter in how we reuse and recycle in the community can further reduce waste and unlock more value from the products and materials we use in the home.”

“We know there are some great ideas within the community about waste circularity, and that’s why we want residents to get involved,” she said.

Council is proposing that residents cut down on waste by only using what is required, buying long-lasting products, improving recycling habits, and repairing household items instead of replacing them. It is also looking into bringing in a glass collection service by December 2023.

Some other south-east Victorian councils, including Knox and Bayside, have been transitioning to fortnightly general waste bin collections to cut down the amount of waste they send to landfill. Frankston Council has not made a final decision.

Earlier this year Frankston mayor Nathan Conroy told The Times that “any changes to the household kerbside collection services will involve engagement with the community as part of the development of our waste circularity master plan” (“Bin collections to continue”, The Times 2/8/22).

Unless the Council is considering allowing people larger Rubbish Bins for Homes. The only thing I can see this leading to, I more Roadside Dumping of Residential Waste. Which will cause the Council, more Costs versus Less.
Especially coming into the Warming months, having Residential rubbish Fermenting for a Fortnight
