Motor vehicle theft is such a problem but interestingly 2022 saw a really big decrease in car theft (34% Source: drive.com). I’m not sure if this is due to newer cars having better security or owners being more careful about using alarms, locking properly, anti theft devices. I guess the fact that a lot of newer cars have security features such as locking the door after a certain amount of time so even if you forget, it does it for you.
One of the most reported ways for thieves to get their hands on a car owner’s keys can often be because they were left near an unlocked front door or even near an open window. So keeping keys safely stored when at home can really help keep your car safe. Locking a garage both to the outside world and to the home, also helps.
It’s also worth knowing the types of car that are most commonly stolen. For example, the Holden Commodore VE was Australia’s number 1 reported car that was stolen in 2021 with the Toyota HiLux coming in second.
Interesting article. Brought up all sorts of thoughts about car theft in 2023.
