A GROUP of Mentone students played the role of biomedical scientists last week during a visit to University of Melbourne’s biomedical precinct.

Year 10 and 11 students from Mentone Girls Grammar were part of a group of 280 students that toured the university facilities for National Science Week. The students worked with researchers in the Gene Technology Access Centre Laboratories to photograph disease state specimens using light, fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopes. They also toured the university’s Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology, and spent time in the AdaptLab working with 3D virtual reality heart models.

University of Melbourne biomedical sciences head of school Professor Jennifer Wilkinson-Berka said she hopes the visit will “encourage the students to think about the science behind what creates, sustains and threatens people’s lives in Australia.”
