A MAN has been charged for allegedly setting grass fires in Mordialloc after starting a blaze at the Caulfield Racecourse grandstand.

Police allege the man started a fire at the Caulfield Racecourse at around 6.25am on 7 January. At around 12.30pm that day he allegedly started several grass fires in Mordialloc, and also a series of small fires in Arnott Street, Caulfield.

Later that day, police revealed they had arrested a 51-year-old man and charged him with four counts of arson, two counts of trespass and one count each of burglary, criminal damage and theft. The charged man, whose last known address was in Wangaratta, was arrested at Mordialloc Railway Station a little before 2pm on 7 January.

The 51-year-old was remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
