PLANS to redevelop and reopen the motorcycle park at Old Wells Road in Seaford are taking shape.
The Frankston Motorcycle Park first opened in 1980. The track has been closed since the death of 16-year-old Sebastian D’Imperio in December 2017.
In June Frankston Council began seeking expressions of interest for a new operator to take over the site, and has now announced the redevelopment is moving ahead.
Motorsport veterans Yarrive Konsky and Cheyne Boyd have been chosen to lead the project. Konsky said “this is the first track I ever rode on, so being part of the team bringing it back to life is incredibly special.
“Our goal is to make this Australia’s premier off-road motorcycling destination, attracting international riders to train, compete and inspire, while ensuring it remains a safe and accessible space for local recreational use.”
Frankston Council approved the new operators at a meeting last month. It says that the project will be fully funded by the operators, and that it will take around 10 months to complete.
Frankston mayor Kris Bolam said “this signifies an exciting new chapter for motorcross as a sport in Frankston City and for the local region.”
“The Frankston Moto Park will drive visitation, support local businesses, and create jobs — delivering real economic and social benefits for our community,” the mayor said. “There has been strong community support for reopening the site, which has remained inactive for the past eight years while council awaited the outcome of an exhaustive coronial inquest. We are very confident that the new operators bring the vision, dedication, and experience needed to revitalise the site, while remaining true to its community-focused origins.”
