Police are appealing for a woman who may have been a witness to a sexual assault in Mentone earlier this year to come forward.

It is believed a woman had been exercising on a beachside path, near the intersection of Charman and Beach roads, when she was approached by a man about 7.30pm on Tuesday, 7 March.

As the woman walked towards the Bay Trail the man struck up a conversation with her and then sexually assaulted her before she managed to run off.

Police have been told another woman had approached the victim shortly before the incident and expressed concerns to her about the offender’s behaviour.

It is hoped this woman will come forward and speak with police.

The woman is perceived to be of European appearance, shorter than 162cm and about 60 years old with a medium build, short blonde slightly curly hair and possibly a fringe.

She spoke with an accent, possibly European or Italian.

The woman was wearing a shell suit and 80s-style jacket with different colours.

Anyone with information or who knows the woman is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
