Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man performed an explicit sexual act on a Frankston line train in January.

Investigators have been told the man performed the act in the presence of a 14-year-old girl while the train was travelling between Southland and Chelsea railway stations on Friday,14 January about 4pm.

The man then left the train at Carrum railway station.

Detectives have today released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, with a heavy build, short dark balding hair and a tattoo on his right forearm.

He was wearing a black sleeveless t-shirt and black knee-length shorts.

Anyone who recognises the man or has information regarding the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
