The voting process for Frankston councillors is set to undergo a big change.

Currently, Frankston Council is divided into three wards. Three councillors are elected via preferential voting in each ward.  Plans to draw up new boundaries and change to single-member wards are set to be unveiled.

Panels will be appointed to recommend changes to the structures of 16 Victorian councils, Frankston included. Those panels will then make recommendations to the state government’s planning minister.

The Victorian Electoral Commission says the change to single-member wards was mandated in the Local Government Act 2020.  Acting electoral commissioner Dana Fleming said, “Under the Act, these councils must move to single-councillor ward electoral structures.”

“The panels are considering the appropriate number of councillors and wards for each council, the location of ward boundaries and ward names,” she said.

Public information sessions on Frankston Council’s electoral structure review will take place at 12pm on 10 July and 6pm on 11 July. A preliminary report will be published on 12 July, and submissions on the proposed changes will be accepted until 5pm on 2 August.

Kingston Council shifted to become a single-member-ward council in 2020.
