FREE two-hour parking at four Frankston locations will continue.
Free parking has been in place at the Frankston East car park between Young Street and the train line, the Cranbourne Road car park opposite Frankston Fire Station, the Playne Street car park, and the Mechanics Hall car park. The initiative began in response to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The free parking agreement expired on 25 July.
At its 2 October meeting Frankston councillors agreed to make the free parking ongoing. The next 12 months of free parking at those locations is estimated to cost $140,000.
Councillor David Asker said the move was “the very least we can do” for business owners in the Frankston CBD, and hoped it would encourage people to spend more time in cafes and other local venues.
Other options considered by Frankston Council were to extend the free parking provision until April next year and receive a report on its viability, or to scrap it entirely.
The move to make the free parking ongoing was supported by all present councillors except the mayor Nathan Conroy, who flagged support for the April extension instead.
