A DEDICATED volunteer helping to run a food relief program has been named Kingston’s citizen of the year.
Marlene Nanscawen won the award at a National Volunteer Week event hosted by Kingston Council last week. Nanscawen is a volunteer working with Make a Difference Dingley Village to help local families facing hardship.
Kingston mayor Georgina Oxley presented the award to Nanscawen. She said “Marlene embodies the spirit of volunteering and community care. She quietly gives her time, energy and compassion to support others without expecting recognition in return, and her work is helping people feel supported, connected and valued.”
The 2026 Kingston Community Group of the Year award was also presented last week. Bayside Community Emergency Relief was recognised for its work providing relief during natural disasters.
The volunteer-led group was formed in response to the 2020 bushfires, and has distributed millions of dollars in aid. Cr Oxley said “Bayside Community Emergency Relief is an incredible example of a community coming together to support people during times of need.”
“Their volunteers have made a lasting impact on countless lives, not only through emergency relief, but through the ongoing care, connection and support they provide across our community,” she said. “Kingston is a better, stronger and more connected place because of our volunteers and community groups.”
