THE Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association’s 2026/27 season got off to a slow start on the weekend with all the men’s games on Saturday washed out.
The action was limited to Sunday when the women played in three divisions: Provincial, Peninsula and District.
In Provincial, Mt Eliza are sitting on the top of the table at the end of the first round after a strong showing against Crib Point.
While there were only 17 runs in it when Crib Point ran out of overs in their chase, they got there conceding seven wickets, while Mt Eliza only lost one wicket in their innings. The high scorer for Mt Eliza was Charlotte O’Meara who scored 41 runs in 59 balls.
Last year’s grand final winners, Balnarring, scored an easy win against Delacombe Park, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
Opener Jessica Marsh was out for a golden duck, with the next batter in, Catherine Donlon, also fell for a duck. Balnarring then steadied, and managed 6/108. The defendable score was thanks in no small part to Hannah Young who notched up a 50.
Delacombe Park just couldn’t match it and managed just 43 runs in their 20 allotted overs for the loss of eight wickets.
Mt Martha put in a strong showing for their first game of the season against Rye.
The top of the order shone for Mt Martha with openers Angela Dunn and Katherine Laemmle scoring 28 and 50 respectively.
Caitlin Rawiller’s innings of 27 and Mia Keating’s 17 got the side to a respectable 141 runs.
Rye’s openers came out blazing, with captain Ella Hilton scoring 52 and Stella Appleford 30. In the end, the side conceded just a single wicket in their innings, but ran out of overs and fell 13 runs short.
Somerville managed a win against Tooradin in a low scoring affair.
Tooradin’s innings was carried by opener Aimee Mellford who scored 38 of the side’s 71 runs. The side concede only two wickets in their 20 overs.
Somerville’s Tilly Black stood up for the Eagles scoring 45 not out on the road to victory. Somerville exceeded Tooradin’s total in the 16th over.
In Peninsula Division, Frankston Women’s Cricket Club sit on top of the ladder after beating Frankston YCW.
The Stonecats batted first but couldn’t get traction. Their scorecard was a sea of ducks, ones and twos, with only captain Amanda Linford (24 runs) and Courtney Price (10 runs) getting into double figures.
When they ran out of overs, they were 9/63.
In response, FWCC walked it in, scoring the required runs in the 14th over with the loss of just one wicket.
Carrum Downs were no match for Red Hill in their game.
The Cougars managed 70 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs with their top scorer Zoe Findley managing 31 runs.
In response, Red Hill passed their total in the 15th over with the loss of five wickets. Captain Belinda Ingram was the best for Red Hill with 31 runs off just 29 balls.
Carrum Cricket Club Maroon were too strong for Seaford, notching up the win.
Ballam Park forfeited their game against Flinders.
In District Division, Seaford Women 1st XI were too strong for Crib Point Women 2nds.
Crib Point batted first and managed 68 in their 20 overs for the loss of just three wickets.
Seaford reached the target easily, thanks to a swashbuckling 33 runs off 33 balls by Lindsay Tucker.
Carrum Cricket Club Navy didn’t struggle against Frankston YCW Women 2nds.
Carrum batted first and scored 7/90 in their 20 overs. Despite a strong showing by captain Bronwyn Curren (23 runs off 40 balls), Frankston YCW couldn’t match Carrum and ended their 20 overs on 7/74, 16 runs short of the total.
Mt Eliza Women 2nds were no match for Hastings 1sts in their clash.
Mt Eliza took to the crease first and managed to see out their 20 overs with the figures of 5/68.
Hastings made it look easy, thanks to an impressive 48 runs by opener Rhiannon Hewitt. They batted out the full 20 overs and finished with figures of 2/82.
Main Ridge beat Sorrento in a low scoring affair.
Shorthanded Sorrento ran out of batters with a score of just 32 runs.
In response, Main Ridge took to the crease thinking it would be a walk in the park, but five of the first six of Main Ridge’s order had some form of duck against their names. The team steadied with the highest score of 10 belonging to Ella Cook. They crept past Sorrento’s figure after 17 overs.
Heatherhill had a bye.
