A MENTAL health advocate was named Kingston’s young citizen of the year at an event last week. Alice Ho took out the award for her work in the mental health space. She works with local youth committees and leadership groups, and advocates for the needs of marginalised young people. CARERS are coming together for free walking events. Pathway to Carers is a program run across Victoria which connects carers of people with disabilities, mental illness, or the elderly. The monthly walk launched in Mordialloc last week. In addition to the walk, carers are also offered information on services and support they can access. Victoria Police will increase its focus on motorcycle safety in an effort to reduce rider deaths from reaching a record five-year high. It comes as police launch Operation Scoreboard, a statewide road policing effort to coincide with the AFL Grand Final long weekend. The operation has been extended to account for the additional National Day of Mourning public holiday on 22 September, with many motorists expected to take advantage of the four-day long weekend across Victoria. Police are investigating after an officer was struck by a vehicle in Seaford on 18 September. Police were responding to an alarm at a school on Eel Race Road about 3am when the vehicle, that was driving in the school grounds, struck a police officer. The driver then fled the scene. The female officer was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle, described as a white utility with a silver tray, and driver are yet to be located at this stage.
