A solo rider has died following a collision with a car in Frankston earlier this month. Officers from Somerville Highway Patrol believe a man riding a motorcycle east on Cranbourne Road collided into the rear of a Toyota HiLux that was turning right into Olive Grove on 13 January at 11.15am. The 38-year-old Skye man was transported to hospital but died yesterday (28 January). The driver of the Toyota, a 36-year-old Frankston man, was uninjured and stopped at the scene. Officers from Southern Metro Crime Team have arrested a 19-year-old Patterson Lakes man over an aggravated burglary and a string of car thefts. Members were investigating a car theft in Armadale where a Jeep was stolen from an address on Monday night. Detectives believe the same offender then attended an address in Pleasant Road, Hawthorn East early Tuesday morning, broke into the premises and stole the keys to a Mercedes sedan. POLICE operation “Birds of Prey” resulted in over 400 arrests for vehicle crime related offences in the last year. The operation, which began in March 2019, has taken place across Kingston, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula, Port Phillip, Stonnington, and Glen Eira Bayside. Police have made 408 arrests and charged people with more than 2,950 vehicle crime-related offences, including theft of and theft from motor vehicles. A LOCAL netball pioneer had been named Kingston’s citizen of the year for 2019. Helen Hollis was awarded the honour at council’s Australia Day awards ceremony on 26 January. Ms Hollis founded the Edi-Asp Eagles Junior Netball Club in 2003, and went on to found the Edithvale Aspendale Netball Club in 2009. Edithvale-Aspendale has gone on to become a powerhouse club, winning 24 premierships over 10 years of competition. Ms Hollis’ work in netball extends beyond the clubs she founded.
