A NEW multi-sports hub was officially opened last week and is set to be shared by soccer and footy players. The $4 million-plus centre, described as “state of the art” by Frankston Council, was funded by Frankston ratepayers ($2.7 million), state taxpayers ($1.05 million), a Melbourne Water living rivers grant ($55,000) and the Carrum Downs Junior Football Club ($50,000). Councillors at the 13 August public council meeting voted to back a proposal by Cr Kris Bolam to “give away” the first 15 animals adopted from council managed pounds in the month of October when the Pets Day Out event is held. A driver who sped away from police has been arrested and charged after his car ran out of petrol in Frankston overnight. Somerville Highway Patrol officers spotted the green Daewoo, which had allegedly stolen number plates, on Frankston-Dandenong Road about 11.30pm. Police attempted to intercept but the car took off. No pursuits were initiated. Police arrested the man shortly after his vehicle ran out of fuel on Peninsula Link. THE Patterson River road bridge will be opened to traffic in time for snapper season. The bridge is due to open by the end of September as part of works to remove three level crossings in the area along the Frankston line. Construction of the bridge began in early 2018 when an 18.5-metre barge was towed 30 nautical miles from Queenscliff. A 250-tonne crane was placed on the barge and has been used for initial piling work and lifting the final beams onto the bridge.
