BEING able to sit down and enjoy a free, tasty breakfast or morning tea is a huge boon for those “doing it tough” in Chelsea. So, volunteers from churches in the area, including Chelsea Community Church of Christ, St Chad’s Anglican and Chelsea Uniting, combine to put on breakfasts and morning teas for up to 80 diners. “It’s not so much about good meals – although these are important – but more about community and ending people’s isolation,” said Pastor Judi Turnham, of Chelsea Community Church of Christ, in Blantyre Av. “We have school children also getting a good meal…

NEW Chelsea Rotary president Ian Button believes the real strength of the 105-year-old organisation is getting people to talk to each other. “We are very good at networking and making the best use of our resources,” he says. As the leader of one of 50 clubs in Rotary’s 9810 District – with 46 clubs and about 1250 members covering a swathe of Melbourne’s east and south-east – he is proud of their ability to work with others to raise money for worthwhile causes. A STRONG police presence in the Frankston CBD – and especially the entertainment precinct – on Friday night was run as part of Operation Abide. Officers targeted the “radical” selling of alcohol, unruly behaviour, under-age drinking and anti-social behaviour. They also kept an eye out for “vulnerable road users”. Acting Inspector Andrew McDowell on Wednesday said police “would be visible and prevent any social disorder”. He said they would engage with retailers of pre-packaged alcohol because “most drivers for crime come from alcohol”. “It’s a huge issue for us,” he said. “It generates anti-social behaviour, violence and traffic incidents –…
CHELSEA Baseball Club has put out the welcome mat for a new coach. It is seeking expressions of interest from a “suitably qualified, dedicated and experienced person” to fill the role as a playing or non-playing summer head coach for next season. Founded in 1949, the Dolphins field teams in the Dandenong Baseball Association over winter and Baseball Victoria’s Summer League. Vice president Trevor Johansen said the senior appointment was needed to take the club to the next level. “We are a growing club,” he said. “We only had eight players two years ago and have 116 now. The number…
