A man has handed himself in to police following a serious sexual assault in Cheltenham on Thursday.

The 19-year-old Cheltenham man contacted police this morning and is currently assisting police with their enquiries at the Sexual Crime Squad headquarters.

The investigation relates to the serious sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Investigators have been told the 16-year-old was asleep in the rear bungalow of her family home in Devon Street when she awoke to find an unknown man sitting on the edge of her bed about 2.30am.

The man spoke to the girl and threatened to produce a knife before sexually assaulting her.

He remained in the bungalow for about an hour before leaving.
