Emergency services are currently responding to a building fire in Carrum.

The blaze is believed to have started about 3.15am at a community hall on Whatley Street.

At this stage, it is not believed anyone was inside the building.

A number of surrounding houses have been evacuated as a precaution due to flying embers.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established, however it is being treated as suspicious.

Whatley Street is expected to be closed for several hours.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
