KINGSTON Council have voted to “encourage the owner of the Pompei boatshed site to consider including in their plans to develop the site appropriate commemoration of the Pompei boatbuilding heritage and if possible incorporate the main boatshed building in the planned building.”
Attempts to have the building heritage listed have failed, with the Heritage Council rejecting a pitch to include the boatworks on the state’s heritage register in May.
The motion was moved by Cr Rosemary West at council’s most recent public meeting. She said “I think the Pompei Boatworks is iconic to the city of Kingston. It’s something that I know, probably every time I’ve driven through Mordialloc, I’ve just taken note of that building and the heritage it represents.”
“Unfortunately, the building has been sold and it is going to be developed, however the best we can hope now is that council can encourage the landowner to incorporate that building in his proposed future development,” she said.

Why do councils insist upon seeking heritage protection of buildings after they are purchased by developers, thus making developer appear greedy and heartless?
If council was serious about protecting this site, heritage controls would have been applied years ago.
