A SMOKING ceremony was held at the new yarning circle by Karrum Karrum bridge to commemorate NAIDOC Week, 9 July.
The day also marked the unveiling of a 12 metre tall “urban marker”, which is made of six individual pieces that have been installed over the last several weeks. The marker features the design of Bunjil and diamonds. The LXRP said they worked with the Bunurong Land Council to decide on the design.
Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny said “yarning circles are an important part of the culture of Traditional Owners, bringing people together to build respectful relationships and to preserve and pass on cultural knowledge.”
The yarning circle is at Karrum Karrum Bridge. The bridge, which opened in September last year, was named after the original name of the area. Ms Kilkenny said the name was chosen as it “pays respect to the Bunurong people and acknowledges traditional values.”
