KINGSTON Council has called out telecommunication companies to consult more with the community when it comes to the rollout of 5G technology.

A news release sent out by council last week read “Kingston Council has called on telecommunications companies to properly consult and advise the community before rolling out the 5G network in the area. Council believes telecommunications companies should advertise any proposed changes to ensure the surrounding community were kept well informed.”

The mayor Georgina Oxley said “very little notification is given and the community was often left in the dark.”

“We want to see the same type of advertising as you would for a planning application, with neighbours alerted and signage displayed on site,” she said.

“Our community has clearly said that a tiny ad in the back of the newspaper simply isn’t good enough. Many people have real concerns about the impact of 5G and deserve to be aware of changes in their area.

“While council does not have the power to enforce a change, it will be advocating strongly on behalf of the local community.”
