Six people were rescued by two police officers and two members of the public at Carrum last night.
Police believe three adults and three children were swimming in the Patterson River about 8.30pm.
The group got into difficulty and were swept out into the bay along with a boggie board.
The bay was choppy and visibility poor with all members of the group trying to hang onto the board.
An off-duty nurse and an off duty life-saver jumped into the water to help and were soon joined by two police officers
They managed to pull the stricken group to shore and an ambulance was called.
No one was seriously injured but a 20-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy taken to hospital for observation.
