BEACHES in Kingston were closed last weekend to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
Kingston Council announced on social media last week that the beaches would close for the weekend “for the safety of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic”.
No swimming, sunbathing, or congregating was allowed during the weekend closure period. Beach paths for walking could still be accessed.
Kingston beaches remain closed for gathering and sunbathing, but can be used to walk, exercise, or swim.
Beaches on Frankston closed from midnight 27 March, while the Mornington Peninsula Shire also announced the closure of their beaches “until further notice”.
The beach closures are the latest measures introduced to stop people from gathering together during the COVID-19 pandemic. The state government announced that on the spot fines could now be handed to people in violation of the new gathering rules.
Premier Daniel Andrews said “my message to every Victorian is that there are only four reasons to leave your home, food and supplies, medical care, exercise, and work or education. That’s why we are also restricting gatherings to no more than two people except for members of your immediate household and for work or education.”
On the spot fines of up to $1,652 for individuals and up to $9,913 for businesses are applicable if the new guidelines aren’t followed.
“Life is going to look very different for a while but if we don’t make these changes now, the virus will continue to spread, and our health system will be overwhelmed,” Mr Andrews said. “To flatten the curve, we are all going to have to sacrifice a lot. But it may be the most important thing we ever do.”
