DANIEL Maitland’s sister Bec was just 28-years-old when she suffered a stroke, changing her life forever.

Inspired by his sister’s story, the Cheltenham resident will be completing a “hop on hop off style” 28 kilometer relay next month to raise money for the Stroke Foundation. The relay will be completed with support from his family, friends, and gym clients.

“I did not realise stroke could strike people in their 20s, but it changed Bec’s life in an instant,” Mr Maitland said. “The stroke has had a big impact on Bec’s mental health and caused memory loss and personality changes. There was also a flow on effect which included financial stress, a relationship breakup, employment issues and reduced confidence.”

The relay begins in the early morning on 21 November. Mr Maitland is hoping to raise $10,000. Nearly $3000 has been raised so far.

Stroke Foundation Victoria state manager Eamonn O’Toole said “it is clear to see how important Bec is to Daniel, and the significant impact stroke has had on their family. Stroke survivors and their families need help to navigate the recovery journey, funds raised though Stride4Stroke will help Stroke Foundation be there when needed.”

“Every dollar raised through Stride4Stroke will have an enormous impact. It will go towards Stroke Foundation programs like our free telephone advice service StrokeLine on 1800 787 653 and EnableMe, online support services which help survivors and their families transition to life back home after stroke and throughout the recovery journey.”
