THE amount of money in the Kingston Arts Grants pool has roughly doubled since last year.
Council will spend $48,000 on arts grants in this financial year, an increase of $25,000 from the previous year.
A public art mural project led by Anna Wheeler will receive $5,000 in grant funding. An artwork featuring local birds, dogs, and scenery will be put up in Cheltenham. Other grant recipients were Angharad Neal-Williams, Kate Ashforth, Mikaela Stafford, Sarah Matthews, Kieran Carroll, Peter Vadiveloo, Alexander Luciano, Nic Clarke, and Aurelien Gilfeather.
Kingston mayor Steve Staikos said that continuing COVID-19 restrictions inspired council to increase its support for the arts. “Last year we provided a $15,000 increase in funding and we are happy to bolster this even further this year. We hope this support goes some way towards helping local artists and creatives to recover from the impact of the pandemic after 20 months of changing restrictions,” he said. “Community members are craving music, art and theatre – and we have amazing local talent who we want to support to get back to working in the arts and doing what they love.”
