KINGSTON has a new junior mayor.

Eli Murphy (pictured left with mayor Steve Staikos), a student from Carrum Primary School, has taken on the responsibility. In his presentation for the role he said that eradicating litter, particularly cigarette butts, to protect marine life was his main goal.

Kingston mayor Steve Staikos said the junior mayor initiative is a “positive grassroots democratic program.”

“This year students were asked to present on the topic: If you had a time machine and could travel 5 years into the future, what do you hope your community would look like? The students gave some wonderful speeches that discussed important issues such as sustainability and the environment, inclusion and diversity, community safety, and importantly  taking care of each other. These are all themes that we value here in Kingston,” he said.

Murphy is joined on the junior council by Rannveer Singh Kahlon, Paige Donsen, Judah James, Scarlett Presnell, Ruslana Teregulova, Elodie Trutsch, Ruby McWilliams, Chloe Ward, Neve Hoult, and Aadi Chordiya.
