KINGSTON Council will review its Mordialloc Creek Masterplan in the wake of the controversial closure of the Mordialloc pedestrian underpass.
The underpass adjacent to the rail stabling yard near Mordialloc Creek was permanently closed in August last year as part of Level Crossing Removal Project works. Since the underpass closed, Kingston Council has been calling for an alternative pedestrian and cyclist access link.
Last week, Kingston Council issued a statement that it had “endorsed a staged approach to improving pedestrian and cycling connectivity in Mordialloc, reinforcing its ongoing advocacy for better links through the precinct following the closure of the former pedestrian underpass near Mordialloc Creek.”
Council has committed to reviewing its Mordialloc Creek Masterplan, with a goal of identifying potential improvements to pedestrian links. It will also investigate a shared user path overpass across Nepean Highway.
Kingston mayor Georgina Oxley said “council will continue advocating strongly for improved pedestrian and cycling links through the Mordialloc precinct and we welcome further opportunities to work with the state government on practical solutions.”
“We want to see safer, more accessible connections that support people moving between the town centre, neighbourhoods, open spaces and the foreshore,” Cr Oxley said. “Council’s endorsed approach includes a targeted review of the existing Mordialloc Creek Masterplan to identify practical and deliverable connectivity improvements, while recognising the complexity of the creek corridor environment, which involves multiple land managers, environmental considerations and major transport infrastructure.”
