WITH an election looming, Kingston Council has unveiled a wishlist of projects which it hopes to secure state government funding towards.
Kingston Council has approved its “Put Kingston First” campaign, and is calling on election candidates to support its priority projects. Candidates are being asked to fund upgrades to early childhood centres in Dingley Village and Edithvale; the Kingston Arts Precinct in Moorabbin and the Mordialloc Community Centre; the Edithvale–Seaford Wetlands boardwalk; shopping precincts including Chelsea, Highett, Parkdale, and Dingley Village; and sporting facilities across the municipality to support growing numbers of female players.
The Kingston municipality encompasses the state electorates of Bentleigh, Carrum, Clarinda, Mordialloc, and Sandringham. All of those electorates with the exception of Sandringham are held by Labor.
Kingston mayor Cr Georgina Oxley said council’s platform was put together after community input. She said “we’ve listened to what people want for their neighbourhoods, and this campaign is about making sure those local priorities are heard loud and clear in the lead-up to the state election.”
“We know what our community needs: better local facilities, more vibrant public spaces and infrastructure that keeps pace with growth,” Cr Oxley said. “These are well-planned, community-backed projects that are ready for investment and will make a real difference to people’s daily lives.
“Our community has told us what matters and now we’re asking candidates to back it.”
Kingston Council is calling for “co-investment” in the projects, signaling its intent to contribute ratepayer money towards them. Cr Oxley said “some of our best community facilities have been delivered through genuine partnerships between council and the Victorian Government. Projects like pavilion redevelopments, sports lighting upgrades and new playgrounds show how we successfully work together to deliver fantastic community outcomes.”
“The projects in this campaign are planned, prioritised and ready to proceed. With state government support, we can deliver them sooner and give our community the infrastructure it needs now and into the future,” the mayor said. “When local and state governments partner on projects that communities genuinely want and need, the results speak for themselves.
“This election is a real opportunity to deliver lasting benefits for Kingston and we’re ready to work with all candidates to make it happen.”
Sporting facilities being proposed for improvements include Edithvale Common, Bonbeach YCW Junior Sports Club, Dingley Tennis Club, Kingston Heath Reserve, Dolamore Reserve Athletics Track, Beazley Reserve, Glen Street Reserve, St Chad’s Baseball Club, and Chelsea Longbeach Surf Life Saving Club.
