CARRUM MP Sonya Kilkenny reportedly launched an eleventh-hour bid to replace Jacinta Allan as Victorian Premier last week.
On the morning of the Labor caucus meeting to elect a new party leader last Tuesday, 28 July, Kilkenny put her hand up to replace Allan in the top job. Kilkenny has been a staunch supporter of Allan, and was promoted to the Attorney-General position under her leadership.
Kilkenny reportedly withdrew from the leadership contest later the same day. Her withdrawal paved the way for Ben Carroll to be elected unopposed as the new Victorian Labor Party leader, avoiding a prolonged voting process. Carroll was then sworn in as Premier.
After the dust settled, Kilkenny published a social media post paying tribute to the outgoing Premier.
“As only Victoria’s second female Premier, Jacinta has been a role model for women and girls across this state. She has led with decency, intelligence and genuine care for the people of Victoria,” Kilkenny said. “Her legacy is one of meaningful change – the Metro Tunnel, level crossing removals, North-East Link, major projects and hospitals, and the SRL. She has championed better health care for women; strengthened support and protections for women and children experiencing family violence; tackled the housing crisis, making Victoria the townhouse capital of Australia; and has never stopped fighting to improve people’s lives.
“She also carried the burden of significant sexism and misogyny throughout her leadership. But always remained steadfast and determined to deliver for the people of Victoria. That resilience will inspire women in public life for years to come. I have been so proud to serve alongside Jacinta and grateful for her friendship, leadership and compassion.”
