KINGSTON Council is urging the state government to reconsider the introduction of glass recycling bins after a survey revealed that 85 percent of residents oppose the idea.
The state government is mandating that Victorian councils introduce the bin by July 2027, meaning most residents will have four bins. A statement issued by Kingston Council read that it estimates the project will cost ratepayers $4 million upfront, with annual ongoing costs of $27 per household.
A recent survey conducted by 35 Victorian councils, which recieved nearly 25,000 responses, found that 83 percent of people opposed the proposed glass-only bin and 91 percent supported expanding the Container Deposit Scheme to include glass wine and spirit bottles. 85 percent of Kingston residents were opposed to the glass bin and 96 percent preferred the Container Deposit Scheme proposal. Kingston mayor Georgina Oxley said “Kingston residents have been very clear that they want a smarter approach to glass recycling, not another bin at the kerbside.”
“We’re already seeing the benefits of the Container Deposit Scheme, with less glass going into household recycling bins. Adding another bin to every property, along with another collection service, is an expensive response to what is now a much smaller problem. Many Kingston households simply don’t have room for a fourth bin, and we’d also see more collection trucks on our local roads, adding to traffic and environmental impacts,” Cr Oxley said. “The community is telling us there is a better way forward. Expanding the Container Deposit Scheme to include wine and spirit bottles would build on a system that is already working, rather than creating another costly kerbside service.
“We absolutely support recycling and reducing waste, but we also have a responsibility to make sure we are delivering services that provide real value for our community. We’re asking the state government to listen to what councils, and our communities are telling them and reconsider the current approach.”
