SIXTEEN days of events promoting activism against gender-based violence have begun.
The anti-violence campaign is observed across the country. In the Kingston municipality, an intense roller derby match will headline the campaign.
The free Roll for Respect event at Springer Leisure Centre is hosted by Kingston Council in partnership with Kingston City Rollers. The event – which features live music, food, and market stalls – gets going at 2pm on 2 December.
The clock tower at Kingston Arts Centre is being lit orange during the 16 days, and Kingston Libraries is also hosting story times promoting respect and equality.
Kingston mayor Jenna Davey-Burns said, “everyone has the right to feel safe and respected, but deplorably gender-based violence is still perpetrated against women and girls at overwhelming and disproportionate rates, including in the home.”
“The stark reality is that 64 women have died due to violence already this year and we must all urgently stand up and be part of the solution,” she said. “I’m absolutely passionate about creating a future that is free from all forms of violence and our council is very proud to be supporting the 16 days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign through ongoing advocacy and taking practical steps to make a real and lasting difference.”
The campaign runs until 10 December. For more information visit kingston.vic.gov.au/services/health-and-support/prevention-of-family-violence.
