KINGSTON councillors have unanimously agreed to abandon a proposal to subdivide the site of a community hall.
39-41 Follett Road is the home of Cheltenham East Community Hall. Kingston Council had begun the process of subdividing the land and selling the car park adjacent to the hall, but has instead decided to retain it after community consultation.
At their most recent council meeting, Kingston councillors voted to “retain 39-41 Follett Road, Cheltenham in council ownership and discontinue the proposed subdivision and sale process.” The motion read that “39-41 Follett Road, Cheltenham has been assessed as a strategically important community asset and should be retained in council ownership to support current and future community needs.”
The vote was approved with the support of all present councillors: Crs Jane Agirtan, Tony Athanasopoulos, Georgia Erevnidis, Chris Hill, Chris Howe, Nikki Kaur, Sarah O’Donnell, Georgina Oxley, and Hadi Saab.
51 submissions were received about the proposed sale. The council motion read that the submissions showed “strong community support for the retention of the land for community purposes and highlighted the importance of maintaining community facilities within the Cheltenham East Precinct, noting the importance of retaining adequate parking and access for users of the community hall.”
