THE Bonbeach Life Saving Club has officially opened its new clubhouse. The new $4.5 million facility will be used by the club’s 128 members. Bonbeach life savers performed 337 preventative actions and undertook two rescues during the last season of their operation. The two-storey clubhouse features a new storage room, kitchenette, and observation tower. A new training and multipurpose space has also opened. Kingston ratepayers contributed $2.5 million to the project, and the state government allocated $2 million towards it. THE 87-year-old Chelsea Clock Tower has been restored, and will soon be installed at the new pedestrian bridge by the train station. As part of the Chelsea Station rebuild and level crossing removal works, the clock was taken down last year. Now it is almost ready to be reinstalled. Horologist Ronald Datson was tasked with restoring both faces of the clock. He has cleaned the acrylic sheet faces and sandblasted copper surrounds to remove layers of paint. Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested and charged a man following an attempted armed robbery in Chelsea last week. Police were told a man, allegedly armed with a syringe, entered a bottle shop on Station Street and made threats to the shop attendant before leaving empty handed on Wednesday 16 March about 2.20pm. A 45-year-old Coburg man was arrested today and has been charged with attempted armed robbery and assault with a weapon. He will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
