SOMERVILLE highway patrol officers undertook operation “Safe Mate” on 28 May, targeting motorists on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. The operation enforced the rule that motorists must slow down to 40kmph while passing emergency vehicles with flashing lights. While one police car was pulled over dealing with an offender, another checked the speed of passing drivers. A total of 13 people were fined for driving past the police vehicle at more than 40kmph. APPLICATIONS for two grant programs aimed at local businesses have opened. The 2020 kerbside dining encouragement and façade improvement grant programs are set to get up and running. The kerbside dining encouragement program offers up to $2000 to businesses to improve their outdoor dining areas. The facade improvement grant offers up to $5000 to businesses to work on the front of their buildings. The grants are a joint initiative by council and the state government. A CARRUM Downs food manufacturer has teamed with a charity to donate over $50,000 worth of food to people in need. Orgran Foods, which manufactures gluten free and allergen free foods, made a donation of cereals, snacks, and biscuits to Pantry 5000. The charity provides emergency food relief to people in the Frankston and Kingston areas. A MAN who stole baby formula from a Moorabbin pharmacy is wanted by police. At around 5pm, 18 April, the man entered the Nepean Highway pharmacy. He took three tins of baby formula and left without attempting to pay. On 2 May the man entered the store again, and put two containers of multivitamins in his pockets. The security gate sounded as he tried to leave, and security confronted the man. The man returned one bottle of vitamins to the guard, but left with the other. POLICE are hunting an offender who used stolen credit cards in Cheltenham earlier this year. Police believe that the man stole the cards from a commercial premises on 2 January, and used them later in the day. Police also believe the offender is linked to other offences in Toorak and Cheltenham. An image of the man police wish to speak to (pictured) has been released.
