POLICE are looking into a fire which broke out at a Nepean Highway building in Frankston. Fire Rescue Victoria crews were called out to the blaze on the corner of Nepean Highway and Beach Street at 12.47am on 24 January. They arrived four minutes later and began extinguishing the fire. Nearby residents were evacuated while firefighters fought the blaze. Firefighters managed to contain the fire to the top level of a two-storey industrial building. and eventually declared it under control a little after 2.15am. A VOLUNTEER helping to support struggling families has been named Frankston’s citizen of the year. Alistair Leaver from Mums Supporting Families in Need is the 2024 Frankston citizen of the year. He was awarded the honour at a ceremony on 26 January. Leaver helped increase the charity’s volunteer network by 60 percent, and has improved its warehouse operations. Police have charged a man and impounded his motorbike after an extended follow from Frankston to Spotswood on Friday night. Officers observed a man wearing shorts allegedly travelling at a fast rate of speed in the Frankston area just before 11pm. A marked police car attempted to intercept the Yamaha R6, however it allegedly evaded police. Air Wing tracked the motorbike on the Nepean Highway and Peninsula Link allegedly travelling at 160-200km/h. Police are investigating the theft of a caravan and personal property from Patterson Lakes earlier this month. Investigators have been told an unknown male and female attended an address on Palm Beach Drive about 4.45am on 17 January. Officers believe the pair approached the residence in a white Holden Captiva, before forcing entry to a Crusader Excalibur caravan that was parked in the driveway of the property. Inside the caravan was a number of personal items belonging to the victims. It is believed the unknown pair reversed the Holden into the driveway, before hooking up the caravan to the car…

RESIDENTS of coastal areas are being encouraged to take precautions against mosquito bites and Buruli ulcers over summer. Acting Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said 363 cases had been reported in 2023, the highest number since the infection emerged in Victoria in 2004. Buruli ulcer is a bacterial infection linked to mosquitos that can cause significant skin damage. The condition can be treated with antibiotics, making early diagnosis and treatment vital.
