RESIDENTS of coastal areas are being encouraged to take precautions against mosquito bites and Buruli ulcers over summer. Acting Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said 363 cases had been reported in 2023, the highest number since the infection emerged in Victoria in 2004. Buruli ulcer is a bacterial infection linked to mosquitos that can cause significant skin damage. The condition can be treated with antibiotics, making early diagnosis and treatment vital. A PARKDALE resident celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends last week. Catherine Erickson, known to many as Kath, was born on 20 January 1924 in Shepparton. She reached the 100-year milestone last week, marked with a birthday party attended by dozens of people. Erickson served in the Army during the Second World War; the Department of Veteran Affairs says she enlisted in the Australian Women’s Army Service in 1943 and served until the end of the war. THE Langwarrin South home of an iconic author will be opened to the public next month to showcase a personal Valentine’s Day collection. Joan Lindsay, the author of the 1967 novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, shared the Mulberry Hill home with husband Daryl Lindsay. Every Sunday from 11 February to 31 March, the public will be invited in to view a collection of Joan Lindsay’s Valentine’s Day cards.
