PARKING woes could soon be eased in areas where residential development is prevalent. An influx of new residents in homes in Mordialloc, Moorabbin and Cheltenham has seen streets clogged with parked cars over the past decade. Property developers and real estate agents have been put on notice that Kingston Council will not issue additional car parking permits for new home residents around activity centres and major development precincts such as the former Highett Gas Works. A CONTENTIOUS planning application to subdivide Green Wedge land in Clarinda has been overturned by VCAT. A narrow majority of Kingston councillors voted last year to approve the subdivision of vacant land at 2 Leslie Rd, Clarinda against the advice of council officers (‘Green light for wedge carve up’, The News 24/9/14). CHRISTMAS has come early for bargain hunters who will be able to get their hands on discarded furniture and household goods at a new $12.3 million rubbish tip in Frankston. The bargain hunters may even grab a Christmas tree dumped by its original owners at the new Frankston Regional Recycling and Recovery Centre at Harold Rd, Skye. The rubbish tip operator KTS Recycling will open a resale shop at the recycling hub to resell items that can be salvaged and used again. ALARMING evidence gathered in a report about the most disadvantaged areas across Australia has found “disadvantage is entrenched” in Frankston North. The Dropping off the Edge 2015 report by advocacy groups Jesuit Social Services and Catholic Social Services Australia listed Frankston North among three percent of postcodes, named “struggle towns”, across Victoria to be the most disadvantaged. Major factors in disadvantaged areas are unemployment, criminal convictions, disability, low education and child maltreatment, family violence and psychiatric admissions. A COMMUNITY group formed to save the Mentone Hotel from a redevelopment remains hopeful a new pub can be opened on the ground floor of the iconic building. Save The Edgy representatives met with the Mentone Hotel’s new owner Paul Huggins last Wednesday (15 July) to discuss the planning application lodged with Kingston Council to build five apartments on the ground floor and seven on the first floor of the building (‘Edgy plans on the menu’, The News 15/7/15).
