THE community will be able to have its say on the proposed Mentone Hotel development after Kingston Council voted to request approval from Planning Minister Richard Wynne to begin a formal planning amendment process for the site. If that is granted, the amendment process will include a call for public feedback on the proposed development. The council will then review submissions received and determine whether or not to refer them to an independent planning panel for further review. THE groundswell of public support against sky rail on the Frankston line received a boost on Monday evening when Kingston Council voted to oppose elevated rail. Council will write to Labor Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen saying that “an extraordinary level of public disquiet and concern – together with an untimely and unsatisfactory response to earlier council requests for action and information – means it will not support an elevated rail line as an option to be considered in the removal of level crossings along the Frankston line”. The council said it would “continue to work cooperatively with the Level…
MORNINGTON Little Athletics Centre is “potentially homeless” next season unless a new base can be found soon. “We and the Mornington Peninsula Athletics Club are currently actively lobbying the Mornington Peninsula Shire for the athletics track they have been saying they will build since 1999,” little athletics secretary Lisa Henry said last week. “It’s now 16 years later, and the track has still not eventuated. They have earmarked $50,000 in the next budget for planning the track – possibly at the Civic Reserve, Dunns Rd – but given us no time frame as to when this will occur.” The 44-year-old…
ROADWORKS are set to begin near the Ingham’s Enterprises factory, Somerville. Treasurer Tim Pallas visited the large-scale chicken meat producer in Grants Rd this month to discuss the economic benefits of improving nearby Golf Links Rd. He said this year’s budget included a $10 million package to develop business cases for upgrades to key outer suburban arterial roads around Melbourne, including Golf Links Rd.…
A BOTTLE of 1976 Grange Hermitage valued at $1200, a little girl’s Christening candle in a blackened chest of draws, and a walking stick made by his grandfather in Changi prison, Singapore, were among a handful of items saved when a Mordialloc house was gutted by fire in the evening late last month (‘Fire puts end to house, exhibition’, The News 4/5/16). But, despite his emotional attachment to these keepsakes, and his joy at retrieving them, the real thrill for victim Sam Bryant, 36, is the kindness of friends and strangers. No sooner had the smoke cleared from the Powlett…
