A FISHING group that hosts lessons for disadvantaged and disabled children is hoping to reel in some sponsorship and donations to keep spreading the joy of fishing. That’s The Thing About Fishing was established as a not-for-profit organisation about four years ago by Glenn Cooper and Brian Rowley. The group gets by on raising money from sausage sizzles, generous donations from the public and occasional government and council grants. THE risk of shark attack off bayside beaches is “extremely low” according to the Victorian Fisheries Authority but beachgoers should still be “sharksmart” this summer according to the state government body. The VFA’s tips for swimmers, surfers, anglers and divers were issued in the same week Frankston beach was closed early on Sunday (10 December) at about 4.30pm due to an unconfirmed shark sighting near Frankston pier. FIRE restrictions come into force in Kingston on Monday 18 December. This means fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from the CFA or Kingston Council municipal fire prevention officers. Lighting a fire in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of $22,000 and/or 12 months jail. Barbeques and fires for cooking and warmth do not need a permit, but must be lit in properly constructed fireplaces. SAND renourishment works are underway at Carrum beach this week. At least 5000 cubic metres of sand is being dredged from the mouth of the Patterson River and will be transported from the dredger to Carrum beach through a pipe to be spread by an excavator. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) says the sand will initially be a darker colour but will bleach lighter within two weeks of being exposed to sunlight on the beach. Access to sections of the beach in front of the Carrum Surf Lifesaving Club will be limited during the renourishment works.…

GO-Pro cameras valued at $800, a wallet containing $25 and credit cards were stolen from a sales representative visiting the Myer store at Southland, 5.44pm, Friday 8 December. Staff believe a Caucasian man, 183cm, medium build, wearing a black t-shirt with Adidas logo and green cargo-style pants, may have stolen the cameras which were in a Crumpler bag. CCTV is being assessed and the cards were immediately cancelled.
