FRANKSTON’S Station St Mall is set to become a foodie mecca rivalling the laneways and malls of Melbourne according to Frankston Council under a plan to attract quality restaurants, cafes and other food outlets to the area.

Businesses will be offered up to $50,000 in ‘Eat Street’ grants by the council and the state government to transform shops into cosmopolitan-style outlets featuring al fresco dining.

One vacant property is already available and two more are expected to be ready next year.

Frankston Council CEO Dennis Hovenden said the mall was a major thoroughfare for visitors to Bayside Shopping Centre, with ample room for outdoor dining.

He said the grants would bring character to the centre of Frankston and attract Melbourne’s best hospitality operators to Frankston.

Frankston Labor MP Paul Edbrooke said he is “proud” of the joint project as part of a $63 million rejuvenation of Frankston’s city centre.

“I want to see unique hospitality businesses take up this fantastic opportunity to become a part of the overall transformation of this great city into a key destination to visit.”

A temporary pop-up park opening on 17 November will feature Cargo Nutrition Bar and outdoor dining areas.

Hospitality businesses must partner with property owners in Station St Mall to apply for the grants, which can be spent on the fit-out of properties, including commercial kitchen installation.

I would only eat at this rejuvenated area if they ban smoking 100%. Currently I hate walking through there even though it is smoke free, because it isn’t smoke free because you can smoke if you are sitting down eating. It is ridiculous. It is sad that you can not walk out of Bayside/Quayside across to the cinemas without breathing in smoke. It is horrible.

    • Over breathing it in on

Agree 1000% on this one. Try to sit and have a coffee at Gloria Jeans, and the smoke just billows in from outside. Or coming down the stairs from the shops upstairs, and coming out into a smoke cloud. It is disgusting, and if the area is smoke free, it should be TOTALLY smoke free!
