SHOPPERS who stay for more than three hours at Southland Shopping Centre will pay for parking from mid-October.

Shopping centres operator Westfield has flagged the installation of a new parking system featuring licence plate recognition from 16 October.

The first three hours of parking will be free and boom gates will rise automatically with no need for a ticket if a vehicle departs the centre car park within the three-hour time limit.

The move to charge for parking if a vehicle stays on site for more than three hours comes as a new train station is due to be opened at Southland before Christmas this year.

  1. Just another reason to stay away and support your local shopping strip. When the crowds start thinning out, perhaps the management of Westfield will think again. Southland is a disaster anyway, and now we’re expected to pay for the privilege? Not this Black duck!
