JUNE Rea has been named Kingston’s woman of the year for 2020.
Ms Rea was nominated for the award because of her work with the community visitors program. Community visitors volunteer to attend disability service providers and places where residential services are being provided, and report back on the standard of care.
“I am hoping this award increases awareness about the great work the community visitors program does in safeguarding the human rights of the most vulnerable in our community and encourages others in Kingston to volunteer as well,” Ms Rea said.
The mayor Georgina Oxley, who presented the award, said “choosing a winner among the exceptional women nominated for this year’s award has been incredibly difficult, but June Rea stood out as someone who has worked tirelessly for her community.”
“Once again, we have been overwhelmed with the quality of the nominees,” she said. “June won because of her tenacious advocacy that has resulted in positive impacts on the lives of so many Kingston residents, in terms of both living conditions and lifestyle.”
Ms Rea was given the award at a ceremony at Kingston City Hall on 6 March. She was chosen as the winner from 18 nominees across three categories.
