THE new changerooms at Chelsea Recreation Reserve are officially open.
The facilities will be used by Chelsea Junior Football Club, Chelsea Football Netball Club and the Chelsea Cricket Club.
An upgraded pavilion at Le Page Park Cricket Club at Cheltenham also opened last week. The two projects cost the state government $280,000.
Community sports minister Ros Spence said that the new facilities would cater for women playing at the clubs. “Women and girls deserve the same opportunities as men in community sport and that’s why these upgrades at Cheltenham and Chelsea are so important,” she said. “We’re investing in female friendly changerooms and upgrades at community sports grounds so everyone can get involved and get active.”
Kingston mayor Steve Staikos said that the project “are not just physical improvements to facilities but represent another important step in providing the necessary infrastructure to give Kingston’s women and girls equal access to sports.”
“All the proud resident clubs now have what they need to build on their wonderful achievements and take local sport into the future without the barriers that have prevented many women and girls from participating across all the codes,” he said.
