A BULLET left on the car of Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke is being investigated.
The bullet was inscribed with the word “RAT” and Edbrooke’s former firefighter number. Victoria Police has confirmed it is investigating the alleged threat.
The incident comes amidst an escalating dispute between the United Firefighters Union and Edbrooke, who also acts as the state’s emergency services minister. The UFU protested outside of the office of Edbrooke in the weeks prior to the bullet being discovered.
United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall condemned the act, saying “threatening anyone, including a minister we strongly disagree with, is the opposite of everything this union stands for.”
“Firefighters spend every shift protecting life and property,” Marshall said. “Whoever did this does not speak or act for firefighters or for this union. I want police to find the person responsible.”
Marshall also addressed a recent speech in which he stated that the state government is “in the gun”. He said “on Friday I said the Premier and the minister were ‘in the gun’. I meant at the ballot box and anyone there, or seeing the video, would know that.”
In a short statement on social media issued after the bullet was discovered, Edbrooke said “Thank you to the amazing Frankston community for all the messages of support, your calls and emails.”
“When it matters most, our community stands together, because the standard you walk past is the standard you accept,” Edbrooke said. “I do not accept this kind of behaviour.”
