The victim has since been identified as Matt Salau. Tributes to him posted on social media read that he was a “funny bugger” and a “very gentle spirit”. A police investigation into Salau’s death is now underway. In a statement, Victoria Police said that the victim had been “targeted”.

“Investigators believe this was a targeted incident and that the parties involved are known to each other,” Victoria Police said in a statement. “The exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death are yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.”
